Freelancer’s work is coupled with flexibility and creativity
Freelancing has arguably now been recognized as a proper industry around the world. But some people aren’t too happy about it. There has been much uproar in the market over the stature of a freelancer. Some giving it a name of ‘short cut pursuit of a career’ while some passing vague arguments to justify themselves. Well, the ground reality is entirely different. To me, a freelancer works harder than a normal employed person working at any firm with same nature of work. A freelancer’s life is heck of a lot tough with nights spent tirelessly working on projects to meet tough deadlines. A freelancer has a broader scope to cover when it comes to being professional, yet indeed people argue that freelancers lack professional attitude and work ethic. My question to all freelance critiques is what the fuss about freelancers then?
Technically speaking, the whole of western world is now doing a smooth transition towards freelance industry as it has a lot of potential in it with smart business strategies involved. But in contrast, Pakistan has been very reluctant in accepting these creative approaches in the business world and embracing it as a proper industry, though there is a very little development in the promotion of freelancers’ community. There are many fields on which freelancers are active but programming and designing have been on top. If you do some research, most of the projects a local Pakistani freelancer does are foreign projects which offer them handsome amount of money keeping in view the currency difference. Some freelancers are often carried away by this lust and compromise on local projects that leads them to unsatisfactory response from local clients.
Social media has been a driving force in the promotion of freelancers. Media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube etc. have helped them advertise their work. People have often found platform like freelancers.com helpful to advertise their profile in the cyber world though there are potential risks involved including copyright and infringement laws violation as our country doesn’t have strong laws and enforcement that protect the rights and your work could easily be stolen/copied from these portals.
As far as web designers are concerned, there is a need for ability to pay attention to details when it comes to good quality work. There are always pros and cons of every platform you are working on. A firm would teach you work ethics a little more formally than what freelance work can’t. But it is not only work ethics that that counts at the end of the day. There is a lot more to it. When working for any graphic designing firm, your job is very limited and most of the time you will end up producing what you might not be personally satisfied with. Since you’re a part of that system you adapt the idea of “Don’t shake the system because the system works”. However, a freelancer may choose and decide on the concept, nature and other details for a particular project leading to flexible ideas and concept visualizations. So in this way, a freelancer’s work is coupled with flexibility and creativity.
In a nutshell, there is really no reason to degrade the freelancing industry as the world is already looking forward to shift gears towards this industry as it is cost effective as well as high quality work packaged with creativity and flexibility.

What day isn’t today?
Offering lower prices when you are just stitarng up is a good idea in my opinion because referrals from happy clients is definately the best way to get more business. Plus you can usually gain back links to your website this way by putting one on each website you design which will help your website fare better in search engine results amongst the many, many website designers around the world.

Chris, I don’t know if its just my computer, but the text in your cmmeont is extremely difficult to read because the combination of the background of the cmmeont box and the text color don’t go very well together.Just watchin out for youNnamdi
. The irony is, I’m pretty good at 4 of them, expcet for #1 the Salesmanship has never been my forte. As many artists, I grew up as an introvert, raised by a super strict Asian family who told me to never speak up, never question, be assertive, etc. Now that has started to come bite me in the arse as I’m starting out as a designer/brand strategist on my own. It didn’t work well in the corporate setting, so that’s why I want to be my own manager. Thanks for the tips though, I suppose it’s taking risks into the uncomfortable unknown and practicing till I get it right.I wonder how many other designers have this fear of doing the whole salespitch thing. I think it’s more important to see sales really as building relationships and trust, but at the end of the day.. it’s about generating cash flow.
Just observed your site on golgoe and i consider it’s a shame that you simply aren’t ranked increased given that this can be a great submit. Chris,I love the blog, great stuff. I am starting a cold clialng campaign to people facing foreclosure who may need our services. I am curious bout the script you use to get permission to call back. I have been trying to set the appointment the first time out and have not been having much luck. Keep up the good work.
I also have read about this topic extensively in the last coulpe of months. To expand a portfolio, a designer is often recommended to volunteer work for a choice non profit. Unfortunately, I have seen such design requests moved to Crowdsourced sites as well. Increased output to choose from and a PR buzz.A local nonprofit I support, was looking for a new logo. Unfortunately they chose a contest with a contest site. After giving it a long thought I joined in. The contest drew 500 designs also fueled by submissions from local supporters like me. I won the contest but I am not proud. I can put the logo in my portfolio and the name of the organization creates a buzz, but some people think I am the “contest designer”. I am seriously concerned about the glut of crowdsourcing.Contest sites highly advertise and try to feel hip in the height of social media. It is not the local grocer or tiny startup anymore who uses these sites for designs. More desirable clients read the news as well and strive to join in. I have seen well known companies, such as the GAP, Unilever or Barilla. A contest is used as part of social media to make a brand known. In cases such as the GAP, the contest sourced logo was not even used.Expect more of this to come in the future. Young designers who participate will not learn how to work directly with clients and may consider this a normal way to work. The idea that design is a cheap thing to get, is spreading. I can only tell designers to “not participate”.The lowballed contest prices, that are nowhere near a living wage in the US, will later get you when you are trying to quote your real prices for follow up orders.I suggest legislation to make contest sites to pay the income taxes for every completed design, as most likely none of the contest designers abroad will declare their income to the IRS here.
Isaiah thanks for the arcilte, same as Irene, my weak point is no1. Apart from the last 10 months that I have been working freelance, I always worked in environments where I didn’t have to worry about sales and winning pitches. Plus my personality is more introvert and this doesn’t help at all.Things change as now I need to develop these skills, in order to make ends meet(probably better than that). After almost 9 years working as an employee, I made a conscious decision to work on my own even if it means acquiring all these new trades
I have seen lots of useful points on your internet site about pcs. However, I’ve the view that netbooks are still not nearly powerful adequately to be a good option if you normally do projects that require lots of power, for example video editing. But for web surfing, microsoft word processing, and a lot other prevalent computer functions they are fine, provided you never mind the small screen size. Thanks for sharing your notions.
Greetings, how’s it going? I hope you do well. I wanted to say that I like What’s the fuss about Freelancers – by Ahsan Karim | Mohsin Fancy.
